My new hobby.

My new hobby.

After all these years…

They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They’d keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile.

And there are those people who are catfish in life. And they keep you on your toes. They keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh. And I thank god for the catfish because we would be droll, boring and dull if we didn’t have somebody nipping at our fin.

What I’m Playing - November 2011

Dungeons of Dreadmor

I never played dungeon crawlers as a kid, and after playing this I’d say that was probably for the best because I don’t think I would have left the house. At it’s heart it’s a solid challenging dungeon crawl with tons of weapons and replay-ability. (I think I just described ALL dungeon crawlers.) But, what I imagine sets this one apart from the rest is the hilarious sense of humor.

Not only does it not take itself seriously, but it completely thrives off of making a joke out of everything it possibly can. Weapons, characters, items, signs, EYEBROWS. You name it - and there is likely a joke or reference attached to it. One of my favorite games of all time. Buy it, it’s cheap!

Dig-N-Rig

This is a free game created by students at DigiPen university. You take the place of a robot armed with digging tools and you set out to reach the core of the earth. On your way you will collect the resources you get while digging to buy upgrades and tools to help you achieve your goal. A blast to play, and it’s completely free. Give it a try.

Voxatron

Great little indie title created with voxels. Controlling it feels a bit like a dual-stick shooter such as Geometry Wars mixed with a 3D platformer. However, it is NOT a dual-stick shooter (Yet?). While I agree the controls feel a bit odd, I completely understand why the creator made them that way. (Jumping + Dual Sticks = Awkward) If you’re interested, you can “pay what you want” at www.humblebundle.com!

ColourLovers, I love you.

Over the years I’ve spent quite a bit of money on apps with full fledged color managing tools. However, nearly all of them are too disconnected and hard to manage. Being a web developer and overall nerd, I’m constantly switching computers and it’s vital that I can access all of my color palettes without spending a lot of time managing them between devices.

ColourLovers is the perfect web application for color creation, management, and discovery. It’s very quick and simple to create entire palettes and I can access them from anywhere within seconds. It is guaranteed to have a pinned tab in my web browser while working.

Single CSS Templates

This is a simple prototype I created for WVU Health Sciences Center’s new phase of website templates.

We have an incredible amount of sites to manage and it had become such a burden that many of my fellow developers were having a hard time focusing on their development work - which cost us time, money, and motivation. It was clear that we desperately needed more organized control of our templates so that switching them wouldn’t be such a time consuming process.

The link below displays several different layouts and how a single CSS file can handle each of their variations by targeting reusable elements based on their parent. Each variation can change completely by simply switching a CSS file.

These metal carts full of books were one of the most exciting things to look forward to in elementary school. They kept them closed until time for the fair and we would spend all day pondering about what was inside. A great memory.
